(VOVworld) - The 3rd Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) concluded in The Hague, the Netherlands, on Tuesday with the adoption of a final joint statement that underlines the need for closer international cooperation in securing nuclear materials.

All countries affirmed their commitment to the common goal of non-proliferation and disarmament of nuclear weapons and the use of nuclear power for peaceful purposes only. The fourth summit will be held in Chicago, the US, in 2016.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and the Vietnamese delegation actively participated in all activities of the event. In his speeches at the summit, Prime Minister Dung showed the country’s sense of responsibility and its active contributions to guaranteeing nuclear safety and security. Earlier, at the discussion session for a future mechanism for the NSS, Prime Minister Dung said that since it was launched in 2010, the Nuclear Security Summit has been a forum for international cooperation to assure nuclear safety and security. Dung added that Vietnam supports both the annual organization of an International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Safety by the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Nuclear Security Summit in 2016.

Dung met with other leaders on the sidelines of the Summit. Dung and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong agreed to establish a 2013 Strategic Partnership and foster cooperation to successfully implement this partnership relation. Dung and German Chancellor Angela Merkel exchanged ideas on promoting bilateral cooperative ties including the implementation of a project to build German House and the 2^nd phase of the construction of Metro line N⁰2 in Ho Chi Minh city. They also promised to cooperate in activities to mark the 40^th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties in 2015.

At a meeting with Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Mudyiddin Yassin, Prime Minister Dung extended his sympathies to Malaysia for flight MH370 which went missing in the southern Indian Ocean with 239 people on board. Dung said Vietnam is ready to assist Malaysia in the search effort.

During a working session with President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, Dung proposed that the EU consider the development gap between the EU and Vietnam during negotiations for a EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), which are expected to be concluded before the 10th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) in October. He asked Mr. Barroso to accelerate the recognition of Vietnam’s full market economy prior to the conclusion of EVFTA negotiations.
