Syria’s government has accepted a peace plan put forward by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan. Annan’s spokesman Ahmed Fawzi said yesterday that the Syrian government wrote to Annan accepting his six-point plan endorsed by the UN Security Council. Annan has called for a ceasefire in Syria observed by the UN, urging the government to withdraw troops and heavy weapons and allow humanitarian assistance. He also called for a release of those arrested in year-long conflict, and a political dialogue between the government and the opposition. Annan’s proposal sets no deadline for implementing its demands, and does not call on President Bashar al-Assad to step down.
