(VOVworld) – A week of Geneva peace talks on Syria has proved fruitless due to differences between parties. The main opposition High Negotiations Committee (HNC) on Sunday showed their protest against Syrian government plans to delay the next negotiations until after the parliamentary election scheduled to take place on April 13.

Another obstacle is the future of President Bashar Al Assad who the HNC asked to resign prior to the agreement of the establishment of a transitional government. One challenge arose as the Syrian Kurds declared a federal system in a number of provinces in Syria.
Last week, a Syrian government delegation and the opposition held separate meetings with the UN mediator for Syria, Staffan de Mistura. Mister de Mistura said the ongoing peace talks were scheduled to conclude on Thursday and would be resumed in early April.
