The Congress, which drew approximately 1,400 delegates and 50 observers, approved a final statement, an address by participants, and a list of candidates for a commission to resolve constitution-related issues.

Syria needs to become a democratic country and its people have the right to decide their own future, Russian Foreign Ministry’s website reported. Russia said the Congress was successful and was an important first step in resolving the Syrian conflict.
