(VOVWORLD) -At least two people died as super typhoon Fung-wong made landfall on the eastern coast of the Philippines on Sunday evening with strong winds of 185 km/h and a rain and wind band as wide as 1,800 km.

After sweeping across Aurora, Fung-wong headed towards Lingayen Gulf, the coastal waters of Pangasinan or La Union province, on Monday morning.

Two deaths were reported before the super typhoon made landfall: a 64-year-old woman in Catbalogan City and a person who drowned in flash floods on Catanduanes Island.

Nearly 1.2 million people have been evacuated as Fung-wong intensified into a super typhoon, according to the Philippine Civil Defense Agency. It is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year, causing heavy damage to the country, which has just suffered from typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed 224 people.
