The blast occurred near the checkpoint at the Wagah border crossing, near Lahore. Mushtaq Sukhera, the Punjab police chief, said a man set off explosives inside his vest in the middle of a large crowd returning from watching a flag-lowering ceremony as the border closed. The Pakistani Taliban said it had carried out the attack. The attack was said to be revenge for the Pakistani army’s campaign targeting Islamic rebels in tribal areas along Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan
