The funeral is held by the Party Central Committee, the National Assembly, the State President, the Government, and the Vietnam Fatherland Front.
The respect-paying ceremony is taking place from 7am to 10pm on Thursday and will continue from 7am to 1pm on Friday at the National Funeral Home. The memorial service will be held at 1pm at the National Funeral Home on Friday, which will be followed by the burial ceremony from 3pm on the same day at Mai Dich Cemetery in Hanoi.
At the same time, respect-paying and memorial services for Mr. Trong are held at Thong Nhat Hall in Ho Chi Minh City and in his native land in Dong Anh district, Hanoi.
The ceremonies in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are broadcast live on the Voice of Vietnam and Vietnam Television.
The national flag was flown half-mast at Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi at 6am on Thursday, marking the start of the national mourning for Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong.
During the two-day national mourning, national flags are flown at half-mast at State offices and public places, and entertainment activities are suspended.
Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong passed away in Hanoi at 1:38 pm last Friday due to his advanced age and severe illness. He was 80.
