(VOVWORLD) - The state funeral for former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Do Muoi began on Saturday with a tribute-paying ceremony at the national funeral house in Hanoi and Reunification Hall in Ho Chi Minh City.

The funeral committee consists of 39 members headed by Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong.

Among the first mourners were Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Acting President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Tran Thanh Man.

Writing in the funeral guest book, Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong noted that former Party General Secretary Do Muoi was an outstanding, prestigious leader of the Vietnamese Party, State, and people, and a loyal member of the Communist Party of Vietnam who worked for the people’s happiness and made great contributions to national liberation, reunification, renewal and construction. Mr. Trong wrote former Party leader Do Muoi’s passing is a great loss to the Vietnamese Party, State, and people.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc wrote that former Party leader Do Muoi held several key positions in the Party and the government and made mark in every position that he held. He promoted the external policy of befriending with all countries, opened a new period for Vietnam’s diplomacy, and created breakthroughs in Vietnam’s external relations and international integrations.  

Vietnamese Embassies overseas have held tribute-paying ceremonies and opened funeral books for Mr. Do Muoi.

From Saturday to Sunday, the national flag will fly at half mast at all government buildings and Vietnamese representative offices abroad. All public entertainment and sporting events will be suspended across the country.

Former Party leader Do Muoi was born on February 2, 1917, in Dong My commune, Thanh Tri district, Hanoi. He passed away at 23:12 on Monday in Hanoi after a serious illness. Over the past few days, Vietnamese people and foreign friends have expressed condolences over the former Party leader’s passing.
