They were followed by two more an hour later. It was uncertain whether the hostages managed to escape or were freed. Fewer than 30 hostages are being held inside the café and none have been harmed at this stage. Police have contacted the armed hostage taker but refuse to discuss his motives.
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has said it could be politically motivated. He has asked the public to keep calm and continue their daily routines. The hostage taker is believed to be an Islamic extremist.
