Saudi Arabia resumes Umrah after 6-month hiatus

(VOVWORLD) - Saudi Arabia on Sunday re-opened Muslim holy places for the Umrah pilgrimage after a six-month hiatus due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Pilgrims performed Umrah rituals while wearing masks on Sunday morning at the Grand Mosque and  Prophet's Mosque.

As of last Thursday Saudi Arabia had admitted more than 100,000 persons wishing to perform Umrah. Since Sunday the country has gradually resumed the Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca in phases.

The Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, the holiest city for Muslims, which can be undertaken at any time of the year.
