(VOVworld) - Moscow supports Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a meeting with the Syrian opposition on Sunday in Moscow.

The meeting included  Hasan Abdel Azim, the general coordinator of the Executive Office of the National Coordination Committee for the Forces of Democratic Change (NCC); representatives of the leadership of the Popular Front for Change and Liberation and the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union as well as members of the Assyrian community. Lavrov said the Syrian opposition members praised Russia for its political and diplomatic efforts exerted in the interests of reaching a peaceful settlement in Syria via the inter-Syrian dialogue without any foreign interference on the basis of provisions of the Geneva communique dated June 30, 2012. He said he believes the Syrian people will be able to resolve Syria’s problems. Lavrov briefed the opposition leaders on Russian efforts to implement the initiative of President Vladimir Putin stipulating the creation of a wide coalition to confront terrorism, comprising the Syrian and Iraqi armies along with moderate Syrian forces and Kurdish forces and with the participation of key regional and Western countries.

Also on Sunday, the Syrian opposition met Russia’s Presidential Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.
