(VOVworld)- Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on Thursday said that Russia is ready to help eliminate the Syrian government’s chemical arsenal per an agreement reached by Russia and the US. Mr. Shoigu said Russia is ready to send chemical weapons experts and Russian security forces to Syria to assist the elimination of chemical weapons. In response to the question if whether Moscow will destroy its own chemical weapon arsenal, Shoigu said there exists no such plan but Russian factories have the capability of destroying chemical weapons. The same day, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said it has not yet fixed a date to evaluate the plan for chemical weapons elimination due to a lack of documentation. The Executive Council of the OPCW, which includes 41 members who are ambassadors or diplomatic representatives from various countries will meet in the Hague, Netherlands, on Friday to discuss the Russia-US plan. The OPCW takes responsibility for implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention, which Syria was asked to join. The meeting will be held one day before the due date for the Syrian government to announce the end of its chemical weapons arsenal.
