The Ministry’s weapon non-proliferation department chief, Mikhail Unianov, told the press on Friday that a 5-year extension for the treaty would be a positive step towards nuclear security. START III (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) was a nuclear disarmament treaty signed by the US and Russia in 2010 and took effect on February 2011 to drastically reduce the deployed nuclear weapons arsenals of both countries.
