Speaking at a plenary session of the Valdai International Discussion Club in Sochi on Thursday, the Russian leader said the crisis in Syria in particular and in the Middle East in general requires the international community to foster peace, cooperation, and mutual respect.
Mr. Putin said opportunities to deal with common issues and possible threats emerged after the Cold War but have not been exploited.
One opportunity came in early 2000 when Russia and the US and other countries faced international terrorism but they missed the opportunity to cooperate. Putin said it is essential to draw lessons from the past and move forward.
