(VOVWORLD) - Russian authorities have given regulatory approval to a second coronavirus vaccine after early-stage studies.

Russian President Vladimir Putin made the announcement on Wednesday, during a televised meeting with government officials. The peptide-based, two-shot vaccine, EpiVacCorona, was developed by the Vector Institute in Siberia and tested on 100 volunteers. Russia plans to manufacture an initial 10,000 doses, Vektor said, with production expected to begin in November.

Russia’s first vaccine, Sputnik V, was developed by the Gamaleya Institute in Moscow and approved by the government in August.

According to Russia’s Health Ministry, about 400 high-risk patients have received the Sputnik V vaccine.
