(VOVworld) - Russia's newly sworn-in President Vladimir Putin has nominated his predecessor, Dmitry Medvedev, as his prime minister. The State Duma (Lower House of Parliament), which will hold an extraordinary session today to consider Putin’s proposal, will have one week to reach a final decision. Medvedev needs support from 226 of the Duma’s 450 seats.

Leaders of some parties in the Duma including the United Russia party with 238 seats and Liberal Democratic Party with 56 seats have promised to support Putin’s choice. Yesterday, all government employees resigned right after Putin’s inauguration. The new president named First Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov as acting Prime Minister.

Putin yesterday inked an ordinance on long-term economic strategy, which says Russia’s goals include economic growth, income growth, and advanced technology. The strategy targets new investment capital which will account for 25% of GDP by 2015 and 27% by 2018.
