Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc meets female National Assembly deputies in Hanoi on June 10, 2020. |
Vietnam’s contingent of female National Assembly deputies has grown since the first legislature in 1946. Recently, Vietnam has had a female Vice President, three Politburo female members, National Assembly Chairwoman and Vice Chairwoman. Women now account for 27% of the 14th National Assembly deputies, much higher than the average ratio of Asia and the world.
Female National Assembly deputies have manifested their wisdom and power as representatives of the people. They have contributed to streamlining Vietnam’s laws and policies, promoting social consensus, deciding key issues on Vietnam’s socio-economic development, national defense, and security maintenance.
National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong applauded the Vietnam Women’s Union and female legislators for renovating their performance.
She said: “Vietnam’s female parliamentarians have won praise at regional and global arena. They have worked hard to develop parliamentary diplomacy. The Chairwoman of the National Assembly has successfully chaired international forums, where her initiatives have been put into actions.”
At the meeting, the Vietnam Women’s Union announced its plan to integrate gender equality into the national target program of socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas for 2021-2030. It also briefed on the celebration of its 90th anniversary, its national emulation congress, and a series of events on Vietnam’s “Ao dai” (traditional long gowns).
