(VOVWORLD) - State President Luong Cuong and US President Donald Trump commended the positive progress of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, pledging to further deepen relations in a substantive, stable, and sustainable manner.

During their meeting on the sidelines of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in the Republic of Korea on Wednesday, President Cuong congratulated the US on its recent achievements under President Trump’s leadership and appreciated his efforts to promote conflict resolution and peacebuilding in various regions.

He affirmed that Vietnam is ready to serve as a bridge and support efforts to seek lasting, lawful solutions to ongoing global conflicts. President Cuong proposed that both sides accelerate negotiations on a reciprocal trade agreement that ensures mutual benefits, taking into account Vietnam’s specific conditions and the strategic importance of bilateral relations.

He also called for stronger cooperation in politics and diplomacy, economy and trade, science and technology, national defense and security, people-to-people exchanges, and war legacy remediation.

Vietnam welcomes the US’ active and responsible engagement in the Asia–Pacific and Indian Ocean regions, President Cuong said.

President Trump affirmed that the US attaches great importance to its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Vietnam, applauding the country’s growing international standing and continued efforts in reform, openness, integration, and economic innovation. He also welcomed Vietnam’s increased imports of key US products.

At a banquet later the same day, President Cuong met briefly with the Prime Ministers of Canada, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand.
