Prabowo Subianto elected new president of Indonesia

(VOVWORLD) -The General Elections Commission on Thursday declared Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto the winner of Indonesia’s 2024 presidential election.

Prabowo and his running mate, Surakarta Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who is President Joko Widodo’s eldest son, received 96.2 million votes, 58.6 percent of the total cast.

Former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan and his running mate, National Awakening Party chairman Muhaimin Iskandar, received 40.9 million votes. In third place was the Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD ticket with 27 million votes.

Mr. Subianto repeatedly said during his campaign that he will lead, protect, and defend all Indonesian people, whatever their race, ethnicity, religion, or social background, and will build a government consisting of the best people of Indonesia.

World leaders immediately sent messages of congratulation to Mr. Subianto on his victory, including US President Joe Biden, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
