(VOVWORLD) - Poland is ready to ensure the transit of Ukrainian grain via its territory to the poorest countries in Africa and Asia, Polish President Andrzej Duda said on Sunday.

He defended the Polish government’s decision to keep in place a ban on sales of Ukrainian grain in Poland, but underscored the need to do everything possible to increase the transit of grain.

According to President Duda, special transit corridors have been established to transport Ukrainian grain across Poland’s territory to "where it is really needed."

Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia imposed their own bans on Ukrainian grain following the European Commission's decision to end its restrictive measures on those three countries plus Bulgaria and Romania.

The three countries believe that cheap Ukrainian agricultural products, which are transshipped to other countries, are sometimes sold in Slovakia, Poland and Hungary and have affected their farmers.

The EU imposed a ban in May and did not extend it when it expired on September 22 because Ukraine pledged to tighten control.
