PM meets with Tuvalu counterpart, UNESCO chief

(VOVWORLD) -Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said he hopes that Vietnam and  Tuvalu, an island nation in the South Pacific, will soon establish diplomatic relations, as he met with Tuvalu Prime Minister Feleti Penitala Teo on Monday on the sidelines the 3rd United Nations Ocean Summit (UNOC-3) in Nice, France.

Vietnam attaches importance to strengthening friendly and cooperative relations with Tuvalu, the Vietnamese Prime Minister said and suggested that the two sides set up and implement bilateral cooperation mechanisms to take advantage of their cooperation potential.

The Tuvalu PM agreed with PM Chinh’s proposals and expressed his hope that Vietnam would strengthen cooperation with Tuvalu in climate change response.

The two leaders also discussed measures to coordinate and support each other at multilateral forums and on global and regional issues of mutual concern, including strengthening cooperation between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Pacific Island countries and supporting the East Sea stance of Vietnam and ASEAN.

Meeting with UNESCO Director General Andrey Azoulay on Monday, Prime Minister Chinh said Vietnam appreciates the role and contributions of UNESCO in maintaining peace, security and promoting sustainable development in the world through promoting multilateral cooperation in education, culture and science.

Ms. Azoulay spoke of Vietnam's higher profile in UNESCO and expected that the country will continue its contribution to UNESCO.
