The craft of fish sauce making has been established in Phu Quoc for more than 200 years.

In 2012, Phu Quoc fish sauce was the first product of Vietnam to be protected with geographical indications in 28 European Union countries. In 2017, the Vietnamese government recognized the craft and traditional craft villages of Phu Quoc fish sauce production. In May last year, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism certified the traditional craft and folk knowledge "Phu Quoc fish sauce making" as a national intangible cultural heritage.

Nguyen Luu Trung, Vice Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee, told the ceremony: “Phu Quoc fish sauce making recognized as national intangible heritage is an extremely important event not only for fish sauce makers but also promotes the state management over specific products and services, typical of Kien Giang province. It also contributes to quality assurance, brand development, the ability to enter domestic and foreign markets of special products of a locality.”

Every year, Phu Quoc produces 20-30 million liters of fish sauce of 25 degrees of protein or more.
