Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung said at the event, "The settlement of bomb and mine consequences was one of the priorities set by Vietnam as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 tenure."

"The work requires national efforts and international cooperation, and women have played a significant role in the effort."

More than 6.1 million hectares of land in Vietnam remain blanketed by unexploded munitions – mainly dropped by US bombers – decades after the war ended in 1975.

At least 40,000 Vietnamese have since died in related accidents.
