(VOVWORLD) - The Philippines and the United States this week conducted a joint maritime exercise in Subic Bay adjacent to the South China Sea (called the East Sea in Vietnam). Coast guard ships and helicopters from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the US Coast Guard (USCG) were deployed.

The coast guards performed exercises on vessel communication, search and rescue, small boat operation, multi-vessel maneuvering, and emergency response operation on distressed situations such as fire onboard and man overboard.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Philippine Coast Guard said the drill is part of a commitment between the US and Philippine coast guards to enhance interaction in disaster response, security assurance, and anti-terrorism, promoting law enforcement capabilities in the Philippine maritime jurisdiction.

This was the second bilateral exercise between the coast guards of the two countries after the first exercise in May 2019.
