(VOVWORLD) - North Korea said Friday its goal is to build up a "more reliable" force against long-term military threats from the United States, as the two countries marked the second anniversary of the first-ever summit of their leaders.

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Son-gwon said in a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency that what stands out is that the hope for improved North Korea-US relations, which was high two years ago, has turned into despair. Mr. Ri added that Pyongyang will never again provide the US with another package that President Donald Trump can boast of as his political achievement.

The US State Department said Thursday that the US is still committed to implementing the Singapore summit agreement and is willing to take a flexible approach.
