The "traffic congestion" toll is expected to cost up to 23 USD a day and will begin in 2024. With this approach, New York is on the list of the first cities in the world, including London (UK), Singapore and Stockholm (Sweden) to carry out tolling programs for crowded central areas.
The toll collection will help reduce the number of vehicles in circulation by 15% to 20%. The Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA) said the levy could come into effect for up to 10 months after approval.
