(VOVWORLD) - NATO Defense Ministers met in Brussels on Wednesday and Thursday and decided to provide more military equipment, including heavy, long-range weapons, for Ukraine despite calls for a diplomatic solution to end the conflict.

Addressing a press conference after the Defense Ministers’ meeting, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the allies agreed on a comprehensive new assistance package for Ukraine to be announced at the Madrid Summit later this month.

While NATO hasn’t yet announced what specific weapons will be provide to Ukraine, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Wednesday afternoon that the US will give Ukraine military equipment worth 1 billion USD that includes medium-range artillery and anti-ship missiles. The US remains the biggest provider of military equipment to Ukraine.
