(VOVworld)-The Ministry of Health and the General Department on Population and Family Planning held a national workshop in Hanoi on Saturday to discuss on gender imbalance at birth. Vietnam has seen a rapid increase of gender imbalance at birth with a gender radio of 112/100 this year in comparison to 107/100 in favor of baby boys 3 years ago.

The gender imbalance is ubiquitous in both cities and rural areas as a consequence of technology abuse. Delegates called for a comprehensive approach to address the problem, including laws and regulations, communications and education. A member of the National Assembly Committee on Social Issues, Nguyen Thi Kha, suggested incentives to families with only baby girls in terms of welfare and school allowance: “The National Assembly and the government will fine-tune their population policies and issue welfare incentives to school girls, including university tuition exemption, insurance coverage and additional pension schemes. This should be done quickly to achieve timely impact.”
