Under the proposal, the new centrally-run Hue city would cover an area of 4,900 km² with a population of 1.2 million people.

Two new urban districts - Phu Xuan and Thuan Hoa - would be established, while the existing Phong Dien district would be converted into a town. Additionally, Nam Dong district would be merged with Phu Loc district to create a new Phu Loc.

Eleven wards, a township, and a commune would also be established by reorganising 21 existing commune-level units.

After the reorganisation, Hue city would encompass two urban districts, three towns and four rural districts.

Minister of Home Affairs Pham Thi Thanh Tra emphasised that the establishment of centrally-run Hue city carries significant political importance and reflects the collective aspirations of the local population.

The move is expected to provide momentum for economic growth, turning Hue into a regional powerhouse, she said.
