(VOVWORLD) - Mr. Pham Minh Chinh was elected Prime Minister of Vietnam for the 2021-2026 tenure on Monday during the ongoing National Assembly session in Hanoi.

In his speech after taking the oath of office, Mr. Chinh, 63, said the position gives him both the honor and heavy responsibility.

“We will learn from the valuable lessons and experiences of our predecessors to build a disciplined, streamlined, effective, and innovative Government of integrity, putting national interests first and foremost. The Government will work to ensure the people’s legitimate rights and interest and meet their aspirations,” he said.

Prime Minister Chinh said that at the moment, the Government is giving top priority to the fight against COVID-19.

He also underlined the need to promote Party building and administrative reform, finalize institutions for the socialist oriented market economy, increase the adaptability and resilience of the market economy, and ensure macro-economic stability and financial security.

He said the Government will never sacrifice social progress and equality, cultural values and environmental protection for economic gains.

Vietnam will continue to settle territorial and maritime disputes through peaceful means based on international law, PM Chinh said.
