Presenting the government report, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said all socio-economic development targets for this year are expected to be fulfilled, with five targets to be surpassed. Mr. Phuc said that the GDP growth for this year is estimated at 6.8%.

NA deputies urged the government to restructure the economy, reform the growth model, and pay more attention to the private sector.

Nguyen Nhu So, a deputy for Bac Ninh province, said: “It’s important to eliminate barriers to promote the private sector. The state needs to improve its management and strengthen resource mobilization, land management, human resource training, and linking economic components. We need to foster the growth of private economic sector on a par with its potential.”

Vu Tien Loc, a NA deputy for Thai Binh province, said: “Vietnam still faces many difficulties next year to realize the national growth targets in the conext of the decline in the world economy which is forecast to reach the global recession threshold. Vietnam’s target growth of 6.8% will be less feasible because its economy depends on foreign investment and exports. The government needs to prepare a plan in response to the situation. It will also be difficult to maintain the growth rate of 6.8% and improve the growth quality without increasing businesses’ competitiveness.”

Lawmakers also discussed the development of education sector, the construction of highways, and barriers and directions for the agricultural sector.
