Joint statement on Vietnam-Myanmar Comprehensive Cooperative Partnership

(VOVWORLD) -Vietnam and Myanmar have issued a joint statement, highlighting the leaders’ agreement to establish a Comprehensive Cooperative Partnership between the two countries, on the occasion of the Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s visit to Myanmar this week.

The joint statement pointed out 5 pillars of cooperation politics, defense-security, economics, culture, and regional and global cooperation. On the basis of the newly-established partnership, both sides agreed to boost political ties through the exchange of visits, government cooperation, and improve efficiency of bilateral cooperation in other areas.

The leaders shared their views on regional peace and security and committed to boosting defense and security cooperation through information and experience sharing, upholding the existing cooperative mechanisms, and considering the establishment of a Defense Policy Dialogue and the joint working group between the two Ministries of Defense. They also reached consensus on fine-tuning the legal framework for cooperation in defense, crime prevention, and justice.

Both sides expressed satisfaction over their good coordination at regional and global forums, including ASEAN, UN, and the Non-Aligned Movement. They applauded continued cooperation in the effective use of water resources of the Mekong River. Both repeated their commitments to maintaining peace, security, and stability in the region and the settlement of disputes through peaceful means, while abiding by international law.
