During his first diplomatic phone call with Trump, the two leaders highlighted their close ties as allies.

Suga said the Japan-US alliance is the foundation of regional peace and stability, and Trump underlined the need for both countries to promote the alliance.

Addessing a press conference late Sunday night following the call with Trump, Suga said the two agreed to cooperate in the fight against the coronavirus and on North Korea’s missile and nuclear threats.

The same day, Suga and Morrison agreed to continue prioritizing the security agreement between Japan, the US, and Australia, which his predecessor Abe Shinzo had pursued.

According to the Japanese Prime Minister’s Office, national security advisor Shigeru Kitamura plans to meet Robert O'Brien, President Trump's national security adviser, in Washington on Thursday.
