Japan, US seek to strengthen security, economic cooperation

(VOVWORLD) - Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae and US President Donald Trump held talks in Tokyo on Tuesday, reaching agreements on a range of issues, centering security and economic cooperation.  

Japan reaffirmed its commitment to further strengthening the Japan-US alliance and building a relationship of mutual trust between the two countries’ top leaders.

“Through these efforts, together with you, Mr. President, I would like to realize a new golden age of the Japan-US alliance where both Japan and the US become stronger and more prosperous,” Prime Minister Takaichi said.

President Trump welcomed Japan’s decision to raise its defense spending to 2% of its GDP this year. 

The Japan-US summit is seen as a new milestone that would pave the way for deeper bilateral ties. Prime Minister Takaichi and President Trump signed two documents concerning Japan’s implementation of the reached trade agreement and bilateral cooperation on rare earths and critical minerals.
