Japan to raise defense budget to record 49 billion USD

(VOVWORLD) - The Japanese government has revised the estimated defense budget for fiscal year 2020 to a record 49 billion USD, local media reported on Sunday.

This estimate includes the development of a next-generation fighter jet worth 90 million USD.

Deploying two Self-Defense Force vessels to protect Middle East waterways is also under consideration.

The defense budget estimates will likely be approved at a cabinet meeting by the end of this month.
