Japan, EU increase pressure on North Korea after missile test

(VOVWORLD) - Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida on Monday called for the adoption of a new UN sanctions resolution in response to North Korea’s recent intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test.
 

According to Japan's foreign ministry, Foreign Minister Kishida told a UN meeting that threats from North Korea have entered a new phase following its continuing ICBM tests. He said increasing sanctions on North Korea is important, and that China plays a key role.

Earlier at a meeting with Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai, Mr. Kishida said the missile tests have threatened Asia as a whole and he is seeking cooperation with South East Asia in intensifying sanctions to push the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

During a Monday meeting in Brussels, EU foreign ministers condemned North Korea’s launch of an intercontinental range missile, saying it represents a serious threat to international peace and security. They urged the cantry to halt further similar actions.
