Abe informed Hagel that Japan will reconsider the elaboration of the constitution relating to Tokyo’s defense rights. Hagel said he supported Japan’s possibility to grant more power to the army. The two sides discussed the Ukrainian crisis and agreed that threat to use military intervention is unacceptable.
The meeting took place against the backdrop of increasing security challenges in Eastern Asia including China’s military reinforcement and the DPRK’s nuclear program.
