January 1 earthquake kills 222 in Japan

(VOVWORLD) - The powerful quakes of up to 7.6 magnitude that jolted central Japan on New Year's Day has led to 222 deaths, and the ensuing tsunami waves flooded 190 hectares of land, local media reported Monday.

The tsunami inflicted damage across the northeastern part of the Noto peninsula, including the towns of Suzu and Noto on the Sea of Japan coast, wrecking houses and port facilities. The full extent of the destruction has yet to be assessed.

Authority of Wajima city, one of the most affected areas, said that middle school students will be evacuated to Hakusan city on Wednesday.

The Vietnamese Embassy in Japan has confirmed the safety of all Vietnamese workers in Ishikawa. Phan Tien Hoang, the First Secretary and head of the embassy's labor management board, said efforts are ongoing to support Vietnamese workers in Ishikawa, including the provision of supplies and coordination with labor unions to ensure the safety of all workers in the province.
