Italian MPs called on the governments of Italy and other European countries to loudly condemn China’s violation of international law in the East Sea. It was the first time that the Committee held a hearing on the East Sea and invited Vietnamese ambassador Nguyen Hoang Long to attend.

Ambassador Long asserted Vietnam’s sovereignty over certain islands in the East Sea. He reiterated Vietnam’s consistent policy of settling East Sea disputes with respect for the status quo, without using or threatening to use force, through peaceful negotiations in line with international law, particularly the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), seeking a long term solution that meets all parties’ interests and making the East Sea an area of peace, cooperation, and development.
