The Italian overcame third seed Medvedev 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3 in three hours and 44 minutes at Rod Laver Arena.

It was his third straight win over a top five player after his quarterfinal victory over Andrey Rublev and his semi-final upset that ended No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic’s long domination of the tournament.

Sinner, seeded fourth in the world, has become the first Italian to lift the trophy at Melbourne Park.

Australian Open in January belongs to the group of four biggest tennis tournaments of the year, which also includes the French Open from late May to early June,  Wimbledon in late June to early July, and the US Open in late August to early September, with each played over two weeks.
