The bomber detonated his suicide vet at a reception for the vice president, Abdul Rashid Dostum. Dostum narrowly escaped the attack at Kabul airport as he returned home from more than a year in exile in Turkey following allegations of torturing a political rival.

Senior government officials, political leaders and supporters were leaving the airport after greeting the powerful ethnic Uzbek leader and former warlord when the explosion occurred. The attack killed at least 14 people and wounded 60 at the entrance to Kabul international airport. Nine members of the security force and traffic police were among the dead.
