(VOVWORLD) - IS remains a serious threat to international peace and security, despite significant progress made by UN members in combating this threat, Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary-General for the Office of Counter-Terrorism, said at a UN Security Council meeting on Thursday.

According to a report of the Counter-Terrorism Office on the threat the self-proclaimed "Islamic State" (IS) group, branches of IS are still growing in Africa.

The report said IS activity has decreased in Indonesia, Malaysia, Egypt, Afghanistan, and Mozambique. However, since the end of 2023, IS has begun to increase the number of attacks in Iraq, Syria, the Philippines, West Africa, and the Sahel region.

UN officials warned that although IS's financial reserves are modest, the group has not given up its determination to carry out attacks abroad. According to Voronkov, eliminating terrorism will require a comprehensive multilateral solution, not just military force.
