During an open session of Iran's parliament in Tehran on Sunday, Major General Hossein Salami admitted that the plane had "accidentally" become the target of a missile. Iranian lawmakers extended their condolences to the victims' families and said they had no intention of hiding the cause of the accident. The Government will take all necessary steps to investigate, and hold the people involved responsible, they said.
Leaders of many countries, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau applauded the admission, but called for a comprehensive and transparent investigation. Earlier, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had a phone call with Prime Minister Trudeau and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski which welcomed international cooperation in dealing with this accident. 57 Canadian citizens were among the passengers killed in the crash.
