Amir-Abdollahian elaborated in a tweet early Tuesday the proposals he put forward at an online meeting of the foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held on Monday to discuss the recent desecration of the Islamic holy book in the two European countries.

The Iranian top diplomat said he had suggested that the OIC send a delegation to Sweden and Denmark to discuss the issue and demanded the harshest punishment for those who insulted the Quran.

Muslim countries should also sanction the imports of Swedish and Danish products if desecration of the Quran happens again in the two countries, Amir-Abdollahian added.

The same day, Saudi Arabia's foreign minister reiterated the kingdom's total rejection of all attempts to desecrate the Islamic holy book of the Quran, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Tuesday.

During a phone call from his Danish counterpart Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud also demanded immediate measures to stop extremist acts that attempt to insult the Quran and offend Muslims around the world.

The Danish minister, for his part, condemned the burning of copies of the Quran and expressed his regret over such acts.

Denmark and Sweden have been under the spotlight in recent weeks after several extremists repeatedly burned or desecrated the Quran in the two countries' capitals, which sparked criticism from Muslims across the world.
