Iran state news agency IRNA confirmed that the first-class medal of honor, which carried the signature of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, was awarded to Fakhrizadeh's family by Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Major General Mohamad Bagheri.

Professor of physics Fakhrizadeh was shot dead outside Tehran on November 27. No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
