At a press briefing before the athletes' village opened its doors, Bach called Tokyo the best-prepared Olympics host in history, despite the difficult circumstances created by the coronavirus pandemic.
Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike has said he is confident the Olympics can be held in a “safe and secure” way 10 days from now. Many people will be vaccinated by then, which should result in a substantial fall in the rate of deaths and severe cases.
11,000 athletes are expected to show up for the Olympic Games Tokyo, accompanied by 10,000 sports officials, referees, and reporters.
