Updated reports from Indian authorities and media outlets show that of the 242 people on board the aircraft, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members, there were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals, and 1 Canadian national.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) of India reported that the crew of the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner had issued a distress signal shortly before the aircraft lost contact with air traffic control and crashed just minutes after takeoff.
The flight was en route from Ahmedabad to Gatwick Airport in London, UK.
Later in the afternoon, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an emergency discussion with Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu and Home Minister Amit Shah.
He directed both ministers to travel immediately to the crash site to oversee rescue efforts and instructed them to provide maximum support to the victims and their families.
Meanwhile, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the British government is urgently working with Indian authorities to verify the situation and assist the victims.
