India, Canada take steps to mend diplomatic ties

(VOVWORLD) - Indian Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar held a phone conversation with his Canadian counterpart Anita Anand, marking the highest-level diplomatic contact between the two countries since Mark Carney became Prime Minister of Canada in March.

The call is made as India and Canada are working to improve their strained relations. Minister Jaishankar said the two sides discussed prospects for bilateral cooperation. Minister Anand, whose parents are of Indian origin, said on social media that she looked forward to "strengthening Canada-India ties, deepening our economic cooperation, and advancing shared priorities".

Canada previously accused India of involving in the 2023 killing of a Canadian citizen of Sikh origin—an allegation that India has strongly denied. Canada is home to the largest Sikh population outside of India and includes individuals who support the Khalistan movement, a minority separatist campaign advocating for an independent Sikh state separated from India. Last year, both countries expelled the other’s senior diplomats.
