(VOVworld) – General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong held talks with US President Barack Obama at the White House on Tuesday.

They reviewed bilateral ties over the past 20 years and set directions for future relations. Both countries will deepen their comprehensive and sustainable partnership for mutual benefits and for the regional and global peace, stability, and development.

Earlier on late Monday at a meeting with US Trade Representative Michael Froman, Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong affirmed the Vietnamese Party and State’s consistent policy of promoting international integration.

He cited Vietnam’s involvement in the negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement as an example in its efforts to integrate into the regional and global economy.

Mr. Trong said due to its lowest development level, Vietnam will face the most challenges and have to adjust the most legal regulations to join the trade deal. He called on the US to support Vietnam in the negotiation process.

Party leader Trong expressed his hope that the US would expand its market for Vietnamese goods and recognise Vietnam’s market economy.

He noted that Vietnam has been implementing its commitments to the TPP negotiation and will proactively coordinate with the US to hasten the completion of negotiations on the pact.

The same day Mr. Trong attended a ceremony to hand over the new-generation plane Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner from the US Boeing Group to Vietnam Airlines.

The event marked Vietnam Airlines’ fleet expansion, turning the firm into the first Asian airline using the two modern planes Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and Airbus A350-900 XWB.

Previously, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and his entourage visited the Thomas Jefferson Memorial in Washington DC honouring the third president of the US who was one of America’s Founding Fathers and the primary drafter of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
