The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) reported Sunday that high levels of toxic radioactive tritium, an isotope of hydrogen, has been detected in underground water at the Fukushima I nuclear plant. Tests showed that tritium, which is often used in luminous watches, was 10 times higher than the permitted rate. TEPCO will continue their efforts to prevent dispersion at construction sites and monitor the pollution.  The Fukushima I nuclear plant was struck by a double catastrophe – earthquake and tsunami – in March, 2011, forcing tens of thousands of nearby residents to evacuate.
